What to do if your having a horrible day, and can’t get back on track
Is social media just people who when they pass gas it turns into a rainbow?! I must admit that I try to post inspirational material, but what if you are having a bad day and that is the last thing you want to see?
All the smiling faces, family pics, perfect bodies, and relationships that are sooo in love are just a snap shot in time. They have their bad days too, we are not posting that though.
We all want to put our best self forward but that is not always easy to do. Somedays you just don’t feel like it and then you compare yourself to others. I see it all the time in my field of health coaching. You worked all day on your newsletter or your cooking class only to get an email where someone has an amazing video or beautiful graphics. What about my clients who do so well for a week and then everything gets derailed, they fall into poor eating choices and don’t get time to exercise.
The thing to remember is that this is only a snap shot in time. The really scary thing is that my daughter recently said she thought her father would still be alive if he hadn’t been looking at social media all the time. She thinks he believed that he was the only one who felt down, sick and tired, making a bad situation worse.
It is true that what we focus on becomes bigger so it’s good to put out the positive, but what happens when we compare? We feel less than, like a shadow that doesn’t compare to someone else’s life. Then we play the tape in our head of how we don’t measure up.
Stop it! You are perfect, whole and complete just the way you are. You don’t need to shine to be accepted by the world. You need to shine from within and KNOW that you are a child of God and all that you are and do is important. Somewhere somehow you are changing people’s lives, maybe it’s your children’s, your parent’s, your coworkers, maybe today it’s just your dogs. When you are helping others you are growing. When you are feeling less than everyone else you are shrinking.
Somedays I get tired and feel like I want someone to listen to me. I talk to others and try to lift them up and then realize that my own knees are buckling.
What do I do when this happens? I go to prayer. Prayer takes your focus off the problem and puts it on the solution. In James 5:13 it says, “Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.” So it’s okay to show your happiness on social media, it’s just your song of praise. If today is the day you are having a bad day then you get on your knees.
We are being marketed to all the time and don’t even realize it. Try taking a count of how many food commercials are on TV in the evening. These thoughts are being subliminally planted in your head. We start thinking that we can get happier or get a quick fix, if we buy the diet pill, the dessert, glass of wine, the new car, the next remedy or shot of Novocain.
When you get completely overloaded with thoughts and images you filter out everything even the good. This is important! Mindfulness training helps you get in the moment and make real choices about what you want in your life. If you take the time to choose which direction you are heading you can filter out what doesn’t serve you. Sometimes we have to make some hard choices to create a plan that will help us get there.
If you check out mentally and go through the motion of living your life without any regard to what you WANT you are living by default. I remember when I was younger and someone asked me what I wanted I was stumped. I knew I just didn’t want to be unhappy anymore but I had no plan for what to replace it with.
Happiness and health are choices. Create a plan that works for your current lifestyle. Getting from A to Z is not a straight line, accept the sometimes bad days and curve balls. Expect to fall off the path before you get to the destination. The important thing is that you get back on the path.
